Easy Crockpot Kalua Pork

One of the easiest ways to feed a crowd is a big crockpot of kalua pork—also referred to as kalua pig. This recipe will easily feed ten people. When I have a larger crowd, I borrow a second crockpot.

You only need three ingredients, but I think the salt is the key. The red Hawaiian salt makes the difference. Traditional Hawaiian table salt, called alaea, is an unprocessed salt that is rich in natural seawater minerals. The salt is reddish-brown in color due to the addition of a red volcanic clay called alaea. If you didn’t bring any back from your last trip to the islands, you can order it from Aloha Spice Company or Salty Wahine. Even Amazon has a salt collection, this is the one I used when I made the recipe below.

Easy Crockpot Kalua Pork

  • 1 (6 pound) pork butt roast

  • 1 ½ tablespoons Hawaiian sea salt

  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring

When I do a crockpot meal, I want it to be as easy as possible. I simply put the pork butt in the crockpot, drizzle the liquid smoke over it, then sprinkle the salt on it. I put the crockpot on low and let it cook between 8-10 hours. When it is done, lift it on to a plate and shred with a fork as needed. Serve with rice and macaroni salad for a comfort filled meal.
