Hawaiian Word of the Week: Ahi

We have heard a lot about ahi (pronounced: ah-hee) coming out of Maui the last week or so. I’m still sad about how ahi so quickly destroyed so much on Maui…historic buildings, businesses, lives. I started to think more about how ahi, like water, can be soothing and destructive at the same time.

I have a fireplace in my home on the mainland. And in the 19 years I have lived in this house, I have never used it. I’m always in fear that the ahi may become out of control.  But at the same time, I love candles and candlelight and usually have a candle going when I am at home. In my head, the ahi of the candle is something I can control. But at the end of the day, ahi, as we have witnessed recently,  small or big, can be highly destructive. So, while perhaps a little misguided with my fireplace, my fears of ahi hold some merit.

Do you fear ahi as much as I do?
