Hawaiian Word of the Week: Mehameha

The holiday season is upon us and while many of us revel in the decorations and the joy of the season, for many, it can spark ‘mehameha’ (pronounced: meh-hah-meh-hah) or loneliness.

The holidays are about being together with friends and family but that is a luxury that many of us take for granted. Many kupuna find themselves alone perhaps in an assisted facility or just far away from their families, leaving them to be sad and feeling deeply  mehameha.

My challenge to you this holiday season is this: if you see someone who you see is feeling mehameha this holiday, please extend some aloha to them. A simple smile, a card to let them know someone is thinking of them, buying them a cup of coffee…all of this can go a long, long way in helping someone feel some joy.

What will you do for those feeling mehameha this holiday season?
