Hawaiian Word of the Week: hoka

Well, the only feeling I have these days is “hoka” (pronounced hoh-kah) or disappointment. You see, I was meant to be on the Big Island now. But my husband got sick, and then I got sick and then one of our kids got sick. So, we had to cancel our trip.  The trip was going to be a getaway for just my husband and me and we were really looking forward to some adult time together.

Hoka is a part of life. There are always the highs and lows of life. I was going to my happy place with my favorite person. All of us here can’t get enough of Hawaii…and I have been counting down the days for this trip. I am trying to remember that we can always reschedule (with some coordination so the kids are cared for while we are gone) but still…right now it stings. In the meantime, I have some kalua pork in the slow cooker and a homemade mai tai waiting for me.

How do you handle hoka?
