Hawaiian Word of the Week: pomaika'i
/The end of the year always brings a lot of reflection. I think about how the year went (ready for this one to be over, frankly), where I could have done better. I think about what I should have done differently and how I could have been a better person. I also take a look at what I did right..and what I need to continue to do in order to grow and learn. Every year I realize how lucky I truly am and am pōmaika’i (pronounced: poh-my-ka-ee) or “blessed of good fortune”.
On my most recent trip to Kaua’i, I spent at least an hour walking along the beach each morning. As the sun starts to peek through the clouds to start a new day, I watch how the sun reflects on the ocean and shows clarity. I took that as a sign that with my reflection of the year, that in the end, the reflection will result in more clarity. And I can go into the new year ready to make it an even better year.
But every year, I come to the same conclusion: despite how the previous year played out, I am pōmaika’i.
How do you feel pōmaika’i?
