Hawaiian Word of the Week: hulali
I like things that shimmer and shine…things that are sparkly always seem to grab my attention. Maybe that’s why I’m so attracted to the ocean, particularly during sunset. All I see is water that is shimmering or hulali (pronounced hoo-lah-lee). That steady glow of light on the water puts me in a rather zen state where I find I do my best thinking.
It feels so poignant that self-reflection comes when I watch the sun reflect off the ocean. I watch the sun reflect on the end of its day and it feels as if I should be doing the same. When I’m in Hawaii, I make sure to watch the sunset every night. Sometimes I think about how the day went, sometimes I think about the year and more often as I get older, I reflect on the last few years and what I want to see changed in my (now) limited time here. I don’t always walk away from watching the hulali ocean with answers…but I do have a different perspective than when I first got there.
What do you feel when you see something that is hulali?
