Hawaiian Word of the Week: Hale

Blue Lotus Cottage on the island of Kauai. This hale belongs to one of our She Lives Aloha ohana.

When we go to Hawaii we are tourists visiting the lovely islands. Sometimes we forget that there are people who have been on the islands their entire lives…who have grown up with the beauty and aloha that we crave when we go to Hawaii.

When I visit, I enjoy going off the beaten path and like seeing the “hale” (pronounced: hah-leh) or the houses of the local communities. I get ideas for my garden or better yet, I fantasize that I get to live on the island and one of these hale is the one I would live in. Many times I’ll see an adornment on the hale that I know would remind me of where I always want to be…and my quest to find one and take it home begins.

Do you decorate your hale with Hawaiian decor? What do you have in your hale to remind you of Hawaii? Tell us in the comments below so we can share ideas amongst our She Lives Aloha ohana!
