Hauʻoli La Valentines
/Hauʻoli La Valentines! Today we celebrate ‘kipona aloha’…deep love for each other: your spouse, your partner, your parents, your children…and our deep love for Hawaii.
On the mainland, roses are the flower to symbolize love and are extremely popular on Valentines Day. For Hawaiians, the plumeria is the symbol of love and new beginnings.
As spring approaches, Valentine’s Day is the day we start to see our plumeria start to wake up from their dormant state. A new beginning as the flowers start to come to life. Plumerias are typically the flower that Hawaiians wear to indicate their relationship status. It isn’t uncommon to see wahine wearing plumerias over their ears….over their left ear lets you know they are married, or unavailable. A plumeria over your right ear lets people know that you are available…and looking for love!
Over which ear will you be wearing your flower this Valentine’s Day?
