Hidden Hawaii: Kauai Edition

Recently co-founder, Vanessa Fiske, spent six weeks exploring Kauai. She hoped that the extended stay would enable her to find and share more hidden gems on her favorite island.

This stop has something for both the history and the nature lover. At the time the lighthouse was constructed there were no roads and all supplies were brought by sea. The lighthouse could not be reached by road until 1927.

In addition to being a historical landmark, it is also a National Wildlife Refuge and many of Hawaii’s birds can be seen flying around.

Due to Covid-19, many of the exhibits aren’t available to view. Our family plans to return when we can tour the actual lighthouse.

Anaina Hou Community Park

A previous recipient of one of our quarterly donations, we discovered this place in 2018 when the park was still in process of being renovated. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we were prepared to be disappointed about closures. Instead, the lovely staff told us about a reservations only system that was available. Every Saturday morning they add the slots for the week. You pick a reservation slot and your family has the entire park for sixty minutes to yourself. We loved it so much we went twice.

In addition to the park, there is a miniature golf course that is fun for the whole family. Each hole has Hawaiian history about the plants, the people, and the places. I can’t wait to go again.
