Hawaiian Word of the Week: Maika`i au
/This past weekend, I heard from a friend. She sent a simple text saying, “Virtual hugs to you. How are you these days?” It was short and sweet. It took her a second to write, but it meant the world to me to know that I was in her thoughts.
As we continue to keep a safe social distance from those we love outside of our co-quarantined ohana, it’s important that we continue to check in with each other. Maybe it even becomes a part of our afternoon routines - as we grab a mid-day snack or tea. As we do, let’s text a loved one and ask: “pehea `oe?” or “how are you?” (the phrase we featured last month). To respond “I am good” in Hawaiian, we say: maika`i au.
