Hawaiian Word of the Week: Moku
/We all love Hawaii. And as we know, the state of Hawaii is made up of many islands or moku (pronounced: moh-koo) in Hawaiian.
The state of Hawaii is made up of 137 moku. 137! There are the major moku, as well as smaller, minor islands, atolls and islets. Many of these aren’t inhabited by people. The major moku are the ones that we typically visit on vacation, including the moku of Hawai’i, Maui, Lana’i, Moloka’i, Oah’u, and Kaua’i. Two other major moku are Ni’hau (off the coast of Kaua’i) and Kaho’olawe (off the coast of Maui). All major moku are inhabited, except for Kaho’olawe.
