Hawaiian Word of the Week: Kahakai
/When you think of Hawaii, you inevitably think BEACH! Some of the most beautiful beaches or kahakai are in Hawaii.
Kahakai [prononounced kah-hah-kahy (rhymes with “high”)] means by the shore or beach. Most people can be characterized as “kahakai” people or “mauna” (mountain) people and Vanessa, our founder, recently in her “Talk Story Thursday” admitted she is very much a kahakai person. Truthfully, all of the staff at She Lives Aloha are all kahakai people.
The kahakai has this beautiful juxtaposition: the beach can provide an immense sense of calm with its scents, sound of waves crashing, epic sunrises, and sunsets; and the beach can be a place where an angry ocean can bring harm. The world and life can be seen the same way and perhaps that is why we are so drawn to the kahakai. For most of us, it is that calm, relaxed feeling that attracts us to Hawaii, and for us that calm can help us to forget, even just for a short while, all the stresses in our daily life and in the world.
