Hawaiian Word of the Week: ea
On your next trip to Hawaii, take a deep breath and fill your lungs with ‘ea’ (pronounced: eh-ah) or air. I don’t know what they put in the ea in Hawaii but how I wish it could be bottled and I could take it home.
Ea represents breath and life. We know that we all love to visit because of the beauty of the islands, the kindness and generosity of Hawaiians to visitors, but having the chance to take in the Hawaiian ea into my lungs, I feel almost reborn. I breathe in aloha…I breathe the scent of the flowers…I breathe in the ocean…I breathe in the history of Hawaii…I breathe in the land and I breathe in the stories of the kupuna. And when I breathe out the Hawaiian ea, I make sure to send respect and gratitude to the land and the people. How lucky are we to have this experience?
How do you feel when you breathe in Hawaiian ea?
