Hawaiian Word of the Week: Malie
Being in Hawaii can bring a sense of calm, or mālie (pronounced mahhh-lee-eh). It always strikes me as funny how boarding a plane on the mainland and hearing Hawaiian music seems to trigger my body to start to relax. And when I see the islands upon landing, mālie starts to fill my body and soul.
I find it much harder to find that sense of mālie at home on the mainland. I long for the sunrises and sunsets, the aloha I feel from everyone on the islands and the relaxation I get from being in Hawaii. When I start to crave that mālie, I find myself lighting candles that smell like pikake flower or listening to Hawaiian music, particularly slack key guitar music.
How do you find mālie in your life? Let’s share ideas to bring more mālie in our lives.
