Favorite TV Shows Set in Hawaii

With the new season of Fall TV, there have been three notable additions to the viewing schedule that let you have a glimpse of Hawaii. Some are more family-friendly than others.  Something was needed to replace Hawaii Five-O which is only in syndication now.

A new favorite to watch with my tween is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. A reboot of the ‘90s Doogie Howser features a 16-year-old prodigy growing up on the islands. I love her dad’s Shave Ice and Flowers stand because who doesn’t want to get a lei and shave ice at the same time? I’m not sure my younger kids will enjoy it, but it is a very pleasant way to unwind with my oldest.

The NCIS franchise is loved by all and has been running for nineteen seasons. This year it launched an outpost with NCIS: Hawaii. I appreciate the scenery, but I am waiting for the production to smooth out a bit. The latest episode featuring the paniolos was appreciated and a reminder that Hawaii is not all beaches.

I am still on the fence about The White Lotus on HBO Max. The setting is gorgeous as it takes place at the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea. I have never stayed there (only seen my favorite Hawaii sunset from the beach in front of it), so I enjoy the vicarious experience. However, I have not found the characters very likable. This is a late-night watch, definitely not family-friendly.

Other shows that have returned and have current episodes include Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Life. Disney+ also runs several National Geographic shows including Wild Hawaii.
