Hawaiian Word of the Week: ono
If you have been to Kauai, you may have heard of a small pie shop called The Right Slice. Along Kaumualii Highway in the small town of Kalaheo, this tiny bakery specializes in the most amazing sweet and savory pies. Everytime I think about going back to Kauai, I always make a stop at The Right Slice because their pies are by far some of the most ono (pronounced: oh-no), or delicious, that I have ever tasted.
You probably wonder why I bring this up….well, The Right Slice stopped shipping their pies outside of Kauai once the pandemic began. Yesterday, as part of a test they are running to restart shipping, I received their macadamia nut pie in the mail. For the most part, the pie was in tact…and once I took a bite of that slice of pie…I kept thinking “This might be the most ono grinds* on the island.”
I know we all have our favorite ono grinds on the islands. Tell us…what is your favorite ono grinds in Hawaii? Let’s share with each other some great suggestions!
Oh…and once they do start shipping again, I will make sure to let you all know so you can taste the most ono pie in Kauai!
*”ono grinds” is another term to describe delicious food in Hawaiian
